General
Watershed Characteristics
The Arrowhead River, Rat River and Daggets Creek Watershed (ARD) covers
approximately 131 square miles, with 92 in Winnebago County and 39 in
Outagamie County. The eastern half of the village of Winneconne is the
only incorporated community in the watershed. Allenville, Butte des Morts,
Larsen, and Winchester are the unincorporated communities within the
Winnebago County portion of the project.
Land
is primarily agricultural as shown in the table below. Dairy farming is
currently the predominant land use, however, with corn and soybeans as the
principle crops grown, cash farming is increasing. Construction site
erosion and increased runoff from rural residential development is
becoming an increasing concern, especially on the east side of the
watershed. |

Project
Status
After a slow beginning in 1993, the sign-up period for this project
ended in 1997 with 173 signed cost-share agreements in Winnebago County
and 103 in Outagamie County, making it one of the most successful projects
in the state. Conservation tillage and nutrient/pest management were the
most important practices in terms of meeting the goals established for the
project, and this focus is evident in the final sign-up statistics. Over
25,400 acres were signed up for conservation tillage and over 7,100 acres
for nutrient/pesticide management in the ARD Watershed. This type of
success, combined with 21 barnyard runoff control projects and 15 manure
storage projects, allowed the ARD Watershed to achieve many of its
pollutant reduction goals. Over $900,000 state dollars have been spent in
Winnebago County and $500,000 in Outagamie County on the installation of
Best Management Practices. Originally scheduled to end in the year 2000,
the project was extended to the year 2004 because of state budget
shortfalls for several years of the project. |
